RACE 1: GIDDY UP CLUB 22/12 HCP 1500mFav: Doubloon ($2.60) 4th WEATHER: Fine. TRACK: Good
FORCING tactics are often adopted aboard Gai Waterhouse's runners and this mare's win illustrated the worth of go-ahead moves in small fields.WONDERER was urged across from the widest marble to head DOUBLOON and consequently dictated proceedings, rather than allow an opponent to create their own pace scenario. They absolutely walked early.By End Sweep (USA), Wonderer had had run fifth in Irish Darling's Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2031m) last May and she outran PEKALAN who loomed with a menacing burst, only to idle late. More speed and more ground for the runner-up.Track: Good1. WONDERER: Gooree Patoral Company Syndicate b m 4y (End Sweep (USA) - Endless Wonder) 55.5 6 (L Beasley, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse) led without a challenge travelling inside the favourite (Doubloon). She travelled kindly to the turn where she appeared under pressure but refused to lie down in a game effort after the templo suited ($2.60 $3.00).2. PEKALAN: br m 5y (Sri Pekan (USA) - Startrack) 57 5 (G Boss, Trainer: Albert Stapleford) angled back from the wide gate to settle at the rear, she was taken three wide after the pace quickened to improve near the 600m, she battled on gamely in a strong effort against the tempo of the race, she can only be expected to improve now over further (3.00 4.20 4.00) 1/2 hd. 3. FEATHER ME: b m 4y (Inflate (USA) - Pluma Nel Bruma) 53 3 (D Beasley, Trainer: Myffy Rae) drifted back to settle second last where she was followed by Pecalan, she travelled three wide without cover from the 800m to be in a handy spot but was still three wide without cover approaching the turn, she dug deep under pressure and was yet another to hand in a game effort considering the ground covered in transit (14.00 21.00 19.00) 1/2 hd, 1/2 hd. 4. DOUBLOON: 54.5 1 (H Bowman) allowed the winner to cross her early before sitting at Wonderers hindquarters in transit with the tempo suiting both, she began to put pressure on Wonderer as the pace increased near the 600m and on the day others hit the line a shade stronger after she faced the breeze all the way against older opposition (2.30 2.80 2.60 fav) 0.3len. 5. LADY FRISCO: 53 2 (J Penza) steadied to settle 3rd trailling Wonderer in a suitable tempo, she saved ground all the way in the run and others finished off noticeably stronger over the final 200m (12.00 19.00 18.00) 3.6len. 6. Kenwest: 53 4 (L Cassidy) 4th settling 5th turn (21.00 51.00 41.00) 3.8len. All started. Time: 1m30.76s (last 600m 33.43s).Off: 12.35.RACE 2: ESCAPE TO THE RACES HCP 1100mFav: Admirelle ($2.50) 7thTHIRD to boom youngster Diego Garcia in a Rosehill barrier trial - and a very good third - KANETOSHI KING franked that youngster's 'form' by overpowering these upon debut.A grandson of Nureyev through King Charlemagne (USA), he sports the white blaze and points often seen in that breed but he's taller than most and does he get over some ground!Glen Boss cut across behind the field from a wide alley then coaxed a slashing finish to overhaul pacy STRAT'S FLYER who lifted his game from a few reasonable barrier trials.By Strategic, the local colt did his own thing upfront, controlling the speed and he'll be winning a few, as will ASSERTIVE who caught the eye along the fence. Five and six deep, ADMIRELLE's debut position should be ignored.1. KANETOSHI KING: T Kanematsu's b c 2y (King Charlemagne (USA) - Tre Faccia) 55 11 (G Boss, Trainer: John O'Shea) angled across from the wide gate to settle second last, he was 9th on the turn where looking for the way clear, the run came near the 250m and he continually gained ground from inside the 200m to gather in the leader near the line, he did finish off gamely wide out on the track ($4.60 $4.20 $6.00). 2. STRAT'S FLYER: ch c 2y (Strategic - Scot's Flyer) 55 1 (Z Purton, Trainer: Alan Denham) made use of his inside gate and led from the start, he travelled inside Mr Alpine until the turn and held a clear lead near the 200m, it was only late that the winner loomed and considering his huge starting price it can only be considered that he has considerably improvement in him (21.00 51.00) lg hd. 3. MAID OF ANTRIM: b/br f 2y (High Yield (USA) - Danislew) 53 7 (J Innes, Trainer: Paul Cave) wasn't the best to jump and before she settled 6th she saved ground all the way in the run trailling Strat's Flyer and had room to improve near the 300m, she battled away from that point without looking a winning threat but did easily account for the others (15.00 21.00 17.00) lg hd, 11/2 len. 4. ASSERTIVE: 55 carr 53 8 (W Pearson) angled back from the wide gate to settle last travelling outside the winner, he was clearly under pressure on the turn and whilst he was never a winning threat at any stage clearly indicated a bright future once more experienced and tried over more ground (14.00 41.00) 3.6len. 5. MENDOCINO: 53 4 (R Quinn) 7th settling, 6th turn (5.00 12.00 11.00) 4len. 6. Bomber Command: 54 3 (L Cassidy) 3rd settling, 5th turn (11.00 18.00) 4.8len. 7. Admirelle: 53 10 (D Beasley) eased across from the wide gate to settle 8th racing three wide with cover, she was even wider approaching the turn and only battled away in the straight after having more than enough work to do in the run (2.80 3.10 2.45 2.50 fav) 5.2len. 8. Punchinello: 55 6 (J Penza) 5th settling, 8th turn (3.00 4.60) 5.4len. 9. Mr Alpine: 55 carr 53 2 (Ms K O'Hara) 2nd to turn (7.00 13.00) 5.8len. 10. Phalaris Grey: 55 9 (M Bell) 9th settling, 7th turn (31.00 201.00) 7.8len. 11. Invault: 55 5 (L Beasley) 4th to turn (16.00 51.00 21.00) 8len. All started. Time: 1m04.69s (last 600m 34.28s). Off: 1:15.RACE 3: 119 DAYS 'TIL SLIPPER HCP (C3) 1400mFav: Petertwoname ($2.80) 7thCRESTA RUN required eight runs to cast aside maiden status at Hawkesbury recently, now he's targeting a winning hat trick.Awarded this on protest following a scrimmage, the stylish son of Commands appears a more competitive racehorse with maturity. He's a half-brother to Ron Quinton's 2002 Group One VRC Oaks winner Bulla Borghese.RANGER SMITH is also fine young prospect but inexperience cost him dearly. Like the winner, he positioned well back in the field before zooming into the lead and onto apparent victory. Heading to the stipes' room was a mere formality - he had to lose it.Giving Catbird second and third spots, CATCH THE BIRD ran on okay but winning doesn't come easy to her at present.* 1. CRESTA RUN: C G Maloney, Dato Tan Chin Nam, Lee Seng-Huang, Ms C Cheng, Ms J Ho, Chan Wing Seng & Knees Up Breeding Syndicate b c 3y (Commands - Fionnay (NZ) 54.5 7 (HBowman, Trainer: Bart Cummings) eased across from the wide gate to settle at the tail of the field, he followed Ranger Smith into the straight and made his run on the extreme outside but twice from the 250m mark was inconvenienced as Ranger Smith laid out under pressure and the result was only decided in his favour in the stewards room (8.00 9.50) lg nk. * 2. RANGER SMITH: b g 3y (Catbird - Pride Of The Park) 55.5 4 (D Beasley, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse) drifted to settle 6th, he was taken very wide without cover to improve approaching the turn, he kept trying but did run about under pressure and twice hampered Cresta Run from the 250m ($2.10 $2.00 $3.30). 3. CATCH THE BIRD: b/br f 3y (Catbird - Plash) 53 1 (L Cassidy, Trainer: Clarry Conners) settled 5th and she followed Frozen in the run, she became unbalanced when she struck trouble approaching the turn then battled away honestly in the straight. She should have finished closer to the first pair (10.00 15.00) lg nk, 2len. 4. FROZEN: 54.5 3 (R Quinn) enjoyed the run of the race one out and one back in 4th spot to the turn, he was asked to improve soon after straightening but others finished off stronger when it counted (15.00 21.00) 3.1len. 5. BENTLEY ESS: 53 2 (J Penza) 3rd turn (31.00 51.00 41.00) 3.7len. 6. Ready As: 61 carr 59 5 (Ms K O'Hara) 7th turn (5.00 10.00 9.00) 4.5len. 7. Petertwonames: 55 carr 53 6 (W Pearson) pressed forward to lead with Bold Reason on his outside, he travelled kindly in the run but was claimed near the 200m by others who finished off stronger, wider out on the track (2.80 3.30 2.80 fav) 4.8len. 8. Bold Reason: 55.5 8 (G Boss) 2nd turn (7.00 8.00 7.00) 6.7len. All started.* Protest: 2nd against 1st upheld.Time: 1m23.43s (last 600m 34.50s). Off: 1.55.RACE 4: WACO KWIKFORM HCP (C3) 1200mFav: Cavmac ($5.50) 8thA top training performance by Newcastle horseman Steve Hodge to fully tune GEIGERON for this first up victory. Not seen in races or barrier trials since September 20, the solidly built gelding presented in sparkling condition and sat off the leaders before accelerating smoothly for a slick win. He's good for a few more city as his career unfolds.Other go-forward types LANCASTER PARK and STANDABOVE belied their odds for the minor placings. They knuckled down soundly ahead of the unlucky NITROGEN NARCOSIS.CAVMAC spotted considerable start after drawing deep. And his racing style suggests these 1200m scoots are now too short for him.1. GEIGERON: U'neek Racing And Breeding Syndicate b g 5y (Geiger Counter (USA) - Shining Flight) 56 2 (D Mc Lellan, Trainer: Steve Hodge) settled 3rd and enjoyed a cosy run one off the fence with cover in transit, he found clear running near the 300m and sustained a strong finish from that point to withstand all challengers in a pleasing effort after his time off ($10.00 $12.00 $10.00). 2. LANCASTER PARK: b m 4y (Arena - Dr. Murray) 53 7 (M Bell, Trainer: Rod Craig) she settled 6th and was still 6th on the turn where she was taken wide to improve. Asked to go to soon after straghtening and did finish her race off impressively despite a lack of first up form in the past, she maybe in for a profitable preparation later over more ground (41.00 81.00 71.00) 1/2len. 3. STANDABOVE: b/br g 4y (Fasliyev (USA) - Damaflo) 53.5 11 (J Penza, Trainer: Barbara Joseph) settled in a handy spot but wide without cover in transit, he was always three wide facing the breeze to the turn where pushed along to hold his position, then refused to lie down in the straight in a game effort (12.00 31.00 21.00) 1/2 len, lg nk. 4. NITROGEN NARCOSIS: 53 6 (W Pearson) 5th settling, 7th turn (12.00 21.00 16.00) 1len. 5. ROCARENA: 54 13 (D Beasley) angled across from the widest gate to be a clear last on settling, he was still a clear last at the 600m and became held up looking for a split near the 350m he finished his race off gamely with the task impossible as was the case when he resumed late last month at Canterbury (6.00 7.00 6.50) 1.7len. 6. Hadaaf: 56 4 (L Beasley) 4th setling, led turn (13.00 21.00 17.00) 1.8len. 7. Wolfman Jack: 53 12 (R Quinn) 10th settling, 9th turn (21.00 41.00) 2.1len. 8. Cavmac: 56.5 9 (M De Montfort) eased across from the wide gate to settle 9th he raced three wide with cover to the turn where now even wider, others finished off stronger when it counted and whilst he was wide all the way it should be noted that Standabove was wide without cover all the way (6.00 5.00 7.00 5.50 fav) 3.3len. 9. Campbell's Run: 53 1 (L Cassidy) 2nd settling, 3rd turn (21.00 51.00 41.00) 3.4len. 10. Tip Of The Iceberg: 53 8 (G Boss) 8th settling, 10th turn (6.00 10.00 9.00 10.00) 3.5len. 11. Time: 1m10.86s (last 600m 34.39s). Off: 2:38.RACE 5: PEPPERS HUNTER VALLEY HCP (C6) 1800mFav: Windon ($4.60) 2ndVirtually a mirror image of his sire Intergaze, GAZE ON also hails from Rod Craig's Warwick Farm base and he's endowed with plenty of finishing drive. There's a bit of a class gulf between father and son, but this handsome four-year-old is doing good things through his fourth racing campaign - a tougher race seems well within his scope.Dan Beasley waited as long as possible before gunning the accelerator and passing the 200m there was only one contender among this lot.WINDON's tough display confirmed his courage but two recent runs suggest he's lacking in the oomph department. He'll manage further. And PHANTOM AGENT and INTERMOO wound up reasonably well with both chestnuts being comfortably held by the winner late in the piece.1. GAZE ON: G R Watson, J H Flaherty, H Hilley, W Manikas, B W Burke & P K Chin's ch g 4y (Intergaze - Joleur) 56.5 6 (D Beasley, Trainer: Rod Craig) steadied across to settle 10th, he was 8th on the turn where taken to the extreme outside to improve, he continually gained ground to gather in the front runners and draw away to score with authority and he can clearly be further improved at his next run ($4.00 $7.00). 2. WINDON: br g 4y (King's Theatre (Ire) - Tropical Breeze) 56 7 (G Boss, Trainer: Neil Godbolt) pressed forward to race outside the leader early before steadying near the 1000m to race one out and one back, he enjoyed a good run to the turn then battled away gamely only to find the winner (who has more scope to improve) too strong when it counted (4.60 6.00 4.60 fav) 11/4len. 3. PHANTOM AGENT: ch g 4y (Encounter - Zeds) 53 carr 51 5 (Ms K O'Hara, Trainer: Steve Englebrecht) settled 3rd and followed Windon in transit, he was pushed along racing at Windon's quarters approaching the turn, both Windon and the winner finished off stronger over the concluding stages (5.00 6.00) 11/4len, 1/2nk. 4. INTERMOO: 56.5 carr 54.5 1 (W Pearson) showed no early pace and settled 8th on the inside, he was 9th on the turn where awkwardly placed then kept battling over the final 200m with galloping room, he should have finished closer but this is often the case with him (6.00 7.50) 1.6len.5. SUN CHARIOT: 53 11 (R Quinn) 10th to turn (10.00 13.00 11.00) 2.2len. 6. Bella Arena: 54.5 9 (L Cassidy) led to turn $4.60 4.20 4.80) 2.3len. 7. Shines: 47.5 10 (J Bowman) 4th settling 2nd to turn (12.00 21.00 20.00) 7.6len. 11. Valadez: 53.5 carr 50.5 8 (N Thomas) 11th to turn (81.00 151.00) 11len. All started.Time: 1m49.10s class record. (last 600m 34.85s). Off: 3.15.RACE 6: SUBWAY PLATE (C6) 1400mFav: Malcolm ($1.50) 1stThis time last year Nick Moraitis and John Hawkes had the early Doncaster favourite -Binding, fresh off a Sandown Guineas win at his fourth run. Alas, the electrifying youngster went wrong. Now, the pair have another excellent big mile prospect in MALCOLM, not only a Villiers show, but also a very real 2006 Doncaster prospect.A neat, compact type like Binding - smaller than average if anything - Fields Of Omagh's half-brother again dazzled with his ability to go from many lengths off the lead, to streaking clear with consumate ease. He jogged across the line and displays that special, distant outlook you frequently strike in top gallopers. This is one serious racehorse. Villiers, here he comes!1. MALCOLM: N Moraitis's b g 4y (Snippets - Finneto) 56.5 1 (R Quinn, Trainer: John Hawkes) drifted back to settle 4th in a fast run race, he was ridden quietly to the turn and angled clear soon after. He was asked to improve hands and heels near the 350m and yet again unleashed his impressive accelleration as he took control without maximum pressure applied, he went on for yet another authoritive victory as he continues to impress ($1.50 $1.65 $1.50 fav). 2. ASHKABAR: ch g 5y (Ashkalani (Ire) - Welcoming) 58 6 (G Boss, Trainer: Rod Craig) let stride along today and set up a big lead in transit, he still had a decisive lead near the 200m but with the winner closing quickly, he had no answer to Malcolm's accelleration but did show the benefit of being let run along in front unlike the tactics at his last start on a softer track (5.00 7.00 6.50) 13/4len. 3. REALLY FLYING: b m 4y (Real Quiet (USA) - Alto Flyer) 53 carr 51 4 (Ms K O'Hara, Trainer: Kevin Moses) settled 3rd racing on the rails travelling inside Daylight Diamond she was unsuited with the leader holding a clear lead to the turn but battled away honestly nonetheless and can be placed to advange soon (11.00 16.00) 13/4 len, 11/4 len. 4. DAYLIGHT DIAMOND: 55 7 (H Bowman) settled second and raced without cover always under pressure with the leader (Ashkabar) a long way in front, he faced the breeze all the way to the turn and could only be described as unsuited on the day and like the third mare can improve (15.00 21.00) 4.3len. 5. HIPSTER DOOFUS: 59.5 carr 57.5 3 (W Pearson) 8th settling, 6th turn (6.50 10.00 9.00) 5.3len. 6. Come In Spanner: 58 8 (C Karakatsanis) 9th settling, 8th turn (12.00 21.00) 10.1len. 7. Go Go Apollo: 59.5 carr 57.5 9 (D Langridge) 5th settling, 7th turn (101.00 301.00) 12.4len. 8. Glowing Prince: 58 2 (D Norwood) 6th settling, 9th turn (101.00 501.00) 18.5len. 9. Lucky Cut: 53 5 (L Cassidy) settled 7th, 5th on the turn where pushed along, she was never a winning threat at any stage and was later found to be injured in the run (11.00 15.00 12.00) 31len. Scr: Jeteye (8), Ready As (9). Time: 1m23.28s class record (last 600m 34.70s). Off: 3:55.RACE 7: WACO KWIKFORM CHRISTMAS CUP 2400m Fav: Grandiloquen ($2.20) 4thThe Boss factor in big races - how do you beat him!Admittedly the champion hoop piloted the superior runner, but this was an inspired ride to conserve the entire's energy along the fence with 58kg, then bring him bounding into the fray.LORD OF THE LAND was questionable over 2400m (his only run at the trip was a 10th in Starcraft's 2004 AJC Derby), yet the five-year-old is simply racing in the best form of his 22-run career. He whipped these stylishly under topweight.PUBLICITY STUNT did trainer Paul Cave proud. Shooting for five wins in the Christmas Cup, Cave presented the stayer in perfect shape after a 39 lay-off. Alas, both he and PRINCESS GEMMA just couldn't match the winner's superb sprint at the end of 2400m.1. LORD OF THE LAND: G Harvey's b/br h 5y (Timber Country (USA) - Lady Capel) 58 9 (G Boss, Trainer: Anthony Cummings) eased across from the wide gate to settle 9th on the rails in a great early piece of riding, he did no work in the run but was held up from near the 600m until they turned for home, he weaved his way between others from near the 300m then hit the line hard to score with authority extinguishing any doubts about his ability at the distance ($3.00 $5.00 $4.00 $4.20). 2. PUBLICITY STUNT: b g 6y (Lake Coniston (Ire) - Publicise) 54 11 (J Innes, Trainer: Paul Cave) settled in 3rd spot racing without cover with the tempo no help, he was still 3rd on the turn and whilst he had no answer to the winner's finish he was unsuited on the day and his effort all in was still good (5.00 9.00 8.50 9.00) 11/2len. 3. PRINCESS GEMMA: ch m 4y (Dr Fong (USA) - Sans Averti) 53 13 (T Jones, Trainer: Mario Caltabiano) pressed forward from the wide gate to settle 2nd, she continually raced in 2nd spot to the turn with the leader and favourite always well clear as is her nature, she refused to give in despite the unhelpful tempo in a brave effort considering the distance rise on the day (5.00 6.50 6.00) 11/2len, lg hd. 4. GRANDILOQUENT: 53 12 (R Quinn) pressed forward from the wide gate to lead giving the backmarkers their chance as he set a solid pace up front, he still held a sizable lead on the turn but was found out in the straight by the class rise (2.00 2.30 2.20 fav) 3.2len. 5. COLMAINE: 53 3 (Mitchell Bell) 7th settling 10th turn (61.00 301.00 101.00) 3.3len. 6. Danebar: 53 10 (Z Purton) 10th settling 9th turn (61.00 151.00) 3.4len. 7. Frescante: 53 4 (D Beasley) 11th settling 12th turn (8.00 13.00 11.00) 3.5len. 8. Dodgem: 53 carr 54.5 1 (D McLellan) settled 4th and followed Princess Gemma in transit, he enjoyed a good run on the inside to the turn but others did finish off stronger over the final 150m (10.00 26.00) 4.5len. 9. Ancient Sunlight: 53 7 (W Pearson) 6th turn (51.00 81.00 61.00) 5.6len. 10. The Hungry Mile: 53 6 (A Cavallo) 8th settling 7th turn (81.00 201.00 91.00) 5.7len. 11. Dr Loane: 53 5 (J Penza) 13th settling 11th turn (101.00 301.00) 5.9len. 12. Beau: 53 8 (Ms K O'Hara) 12th settling 11th turn (12.00 26.00) 6.6len. 13. Off: 4.36.RACE 8: BOOK NOW FOR GOLDEN SLIPPER 1200mFav: Cool Front ($3.40) 3rdImpressive swoopers were in abundance at Rosehill yesterdayRADETZKY MARCH unleashed an undeniable sprint like Kanetoshi King, Malcolm and Lord Of The Land. One thing's certain, this grey wasn't as fit as any of the others. Tim Clark brought him back from a six month spell showing a degree of flab yet the Langfuhr (USA) gelding absolutely trounced his rivals. He actually cruised through his final 50m.Gallant RESISTOR has a history of running into classy opponents. As fit as could be, the Danehill gelding sat close and dug deep, but again struck an infinitely superior foe.And well backed COOL FRONT ran a strange race. Turned out a treat, he box seated before encountering traffic problems entering the stretch. He took ages to focus and cut loose, but all too late.1. RADETZKY MARCH: B F Higgins's gr/br g 5y (Langfuhr (Can) - Gioia Mia) 56.5 2 (H Bowman, Trainer: Tim Clark) settled 10th, he steadily improved to be 6th on the turn and looking ominous, he quickly responded when asked to improve and raced away to score with authority in another highly impressive effort first-up ($3.00 $5.00 $4.80 $5.00). 2. RESISTOR: b g 5y (Danehill (USA) - Volte) 56 10 (R Brewer, Trainer: Bob Thomsen) pressed forward from the wide gate to settle outside the leader (Price Nimrod) he faced the breeze all the way to the turn then claimed Prince Nimrod near the 200m, he kept trying in a game effort after becoming unsuited in transit but with the winner in a different league (6.00 8.50) 2len. 3. COOL FRONT: b g 5y (Hurricane Sky - Oh So Sirius) 58 3 (G Boss, Trainer: John O'Shea) settled 3rd and raced in the box seat on the rails to the turn, he saved ground all the way in transit but became awkwardly placed soon after straightening, he tried hard once he gained galloping room in a pleasing effort first up. He should have finished closer but at no stage would he have troubled the winner (3.50 3.90 3.40 fav) 2len, lg hd. 4. PRINCE NIMROD: 54 11 (A Cavallo) worked across from the wide gate to lead travelling inside Resistor in the run, he gave the back markers their chance when he set a solid tempo and had no answer firstly to Resistor near the 200m and then subsequently Redetzky March and Cool Front also finished (21.00 31.00) 2.9len. 5.
