RACE 1: CARIOCA HCP 1800m Fav: Men At Work ($1.60) 2nd WEATHER: Fine. TRACK: Good
JIM Cassidy has a long history of trumping rivals if allowed to do as he likes in front and nothing has changed in 2005!HAVANA WIND wore blinkers for the first time and eventually came back under Cassidy in a 1m14.9s first 1200m. This enabled him to beat MEN AT WORK whose chances evaporated when he went from a length behind the winner to following bus-like creatures MOUNTAIN OF LIGHT and MARSCAY'S IMAGE.Men At Work's trailing margins shed more light - one length away at the 700m, four lengths behind at the 500m and beaten three-quarters of a length. The only way was up for favourite backers.1. HAVANA WIND: Mrs V L Smith, K R & Mrs E M Wood, R S Fiszman & G F Pash's ch g 4y (Spinning World (USA) - Hiavanna) 57.5 6 (J Cassidy, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse) led and raced keenly in the run, pinched a break on the turn as Men At Work was forced wide to improve, this became a winning move as he battled away over the last 350m with the favourite closing steadily but with a great enough margin to prevail ($3.00 $3.70 $3.60 $3.80 $3.60).2. MEN AT WORK: b g 4y (Zabeel (NZ) - Sound Lover (NZ) 55.5 1 (C Brown, Trainer: John O'Shea) settled 3rd and enjoyed a good run to the 600m where now awkwardly placed, taken wide to improve on the turn as the winner (Havana Wind) made his move, kept closing over the last 350m but with the task impossible after he became unsuited by the tempo on the day (1.40 1.60 fav) 3/4len.3. MARSCAY'S IMAGE: ch g 4y (Marscay - Miss Java (Ire) 55.5 2 (H Bowman, Trainer: Kevin Miller) settled 4th and raced outside the favourite to the 600m where he was taken wide without cover to improve, placed under pressure turning for home but was quickly left behind by Men At Work and failed to threaten the first pair over the last 350m (15.00 18.00 15.00 16.00) 3/4len, 61/2len.4. BUSH FLASH: 56.5 4 (G Buckley) settled 5th and followed Men At Work in the run, did save ground on the turn but quickly became under pressure and failed to run on in the straight (14.00 21.00) 10.0len.5. MOUNTAIN OF LIGHT: 53 5 (G Boss) raced outside leader (Havana Wind) to the turn where he was pushed along to maintain his position, gradually lost ground in the straight as he tired under riding (16.00 26.00 18.00) 12.2len.6. Creston King: 53 3 (L Cassidy) 6th turn (20.00 41.00) 45.5len.Scr: Through (5).Time: 1m49.92s class record (last 600m 35.02s). Off: 12.30.RACE 2: CROWNE PLAZA HCP 1600mFav: Lord Bubbles ($2.00) 4thDANEHILL colt SAXON has long looked a smart middle distance prospect and he's now fulfilling that promise. He's out of a Sadler's Wells mare and only last week his brother Power Of Destiny stamped himself as a superior two-year-old with an 1100m Randwick victory.Big brother has been outsped over shorter trips in six sprints, but only two successes have occurred once Gerald Ryan has stepped him up to Randwick's testing 1600m.After box seating yesterday, the bay avenged his previous defeat by Jymcarew to outgame him in a great tussle. Both gallopers tracked the leaders PEEL and LORD BUBBLES with the favourite hard to back on looks. He's a fizzy Zabeel and hardly looked comfortable pre-race.1. SAXON: Sire Custodians Ltd Syndicate & P Chairatna's b c 3y (Danehill (USA) - Jeanetta Cochrane (Ire) 54.5 1 (B Pengelly, Trainer: Gerald Ryan) settled 4th and saved ground all the way to the turn where he was following the leader (Peel), angled clear near the 250m and battled on strongly to narrowly outfinish Jymcarew over the last 100m after enjoying almost every chance in the run ($5.00 $7.00).2. JYMCAREW: br g 3y (Danzero - Aperto (NZ) 56.5 2 (G Boss, Trainer: Bob Thomsen) settled 3rd but raced fiercely in the run, 4th on the turn, loomed up topping the rise and tried very hard only to find the winner a shade too strong when it counted, did prove his own worst enemy as he over-raced in the run (3.80 4.00 3.80) hd.3. PEEL: br g 3y (Commands - Triviality) 54.5 3 (C Brown, Trainer: John Hawkes) led and travelled comfortably racing inside the favourite to the turn, briefly looked likely to hold his opposition at bay but had no answer to the finish of the first pair over the final 100m (10.00 13.00 10.00) hd, 11/4len.4. LORD BUBBLES: 56 6 (C Munce) raced outside the leader (Peel) and travelled well within himself to the turn, became under pressure soon after and failed to run out a strong 1600m at his first attempt after racing without cover all the way (1.70 2.00 1.95 2.00 fav) 2.6len.5. STORY BRIDGE: 53 4 (J Cassidy) settled 5th and trailed Jymcarew to the turn where under pressure, couldn't match the finishing effort of the first two over the final 350m and failed to look a winning threat at any stage (13.00 21.00 18.00) 3.5len.6. Cool Phantom: 53 5 (T Jones) 6th turn (15.00 101.00) 6.1len.All started.Time: 1m35.58s (last 600m 34.28s). Off: 1.12.RACE 3: WOOLLAHRA HCP 1100m Fav: Octennial ($4.00) 5thFLEET-FOOTED BENNETTS GREEN had botched the jump at his Wyong return but the son of Shovhog regained his turbocharged speed this time.Instantly in front, he cruised ahead of flyers like ZAROUK and BUNKUM to the corner, then comfortably defied all pursuers. The Gosford-trained galloper is yet to score beyond 1100m but that situation may well change this preparation, so strong was he through the final stages.Game, Zarouk maintained velocity throughout, but simply ran into a quicker horse. The eye catcher was PILSENER which looks in excellent health. Starting for the ninth time, the Thunder Gulch gelding hasn't been tested too much for a five-year-old and he, too looks set for a bountiful summer.1. BENNETTS GREEN: W Eagles & Plumbing Supplies Pty Ltd Synd's b g 4y (Shovhog - Zaiglo (NZ) 55 carr 52 3 (K Fuijii, Trainer: Albert Stapleford) led with Zarouk racing on his outside to the turn, sustained a strong run once asked to improve after topping the rise and had no dangers over the last 150m in a good front-running display ($5.00 $9.00 $7.50).2. ZAROUK: gr g 5y (Last Tycoon (Ire) - Pleasure Cruise) 55 carr 53 4 (M Bell, Trainer: Patrick Webster) raced outside the leader (Bennetts Green) to the turn, briefly matched strides with that horse but had no answer to the winners finish over final 200m (4.00 7.00 6.50) 11/4len.3. PILSENER: b g 5y (Thunder Gulch (USA) - Amber) 54 7 (Z Purton, Trainer: Garry White) angled back from the extreme widest gate to settle 7th and raced outside the favourite to the turn where now blocked for a run, only became totally clear near the 100m and did gain ground from that point with the task impossible, needed to be clear much earlier to do his best (6.00 9.50) 11/4len, 11/4len.4. LIL ELSA: 53.5 6 (C Munce) 5th turn (4.00 5.00 4.40) 2.8len.5. OCTENNIAL: 54.5 5 (C Brown) settled 6th after a slow start, 7th turn where looking for the way clear, the run came near the 200m and he battled away honestly but Pilsener, who found clear running later, did finish off stronger (4.00 4.60 4.20 4.40 4.00 4.20 4.00 fav) 3.4len.6. Bunkum: 56 2 (J Sheehan) settled 3rd and followed Zarouk all the way to the turn, his run reached a peak near the 200m and he tired from that point (3.30 4.20) 5.2len.7. Vesmour: 53 1 (G Buckley) 4th turn (21.00 71.00) 5.3len.Scr: Duomo (7).Time: 1m03.25s (last 600m 34.16s). Off: 1.50.RACE 4: WIDDEN STAKES 1100m Fav: Snowden ($2.90) 2ndFIRST and second in running again dominated when PASIKATERA capitalised on race fitness and experience to stall off SNOWDEN.Also by Thunder Gulch, the winner isn't a big filly but her brilliance and professionalism is obvious. She did everything right, unlike the favourite.Big and strong, Snowden seemed sure to benefit from the outing in the pre-race parade but he blew the jump a touch, wasting valuable energy. The brown darted to second and sat off the winner, launched his bid but couldn't keep going before having a decent blow in the birdcage. Better things await. And the same applies to heavily built KINCHARM which came from well out of his ground for a nice third. More ground for this one.1. PASIKATERA: Gooree Pastoral Company Syndicate's ch f 2y (Thunder Gulch (USA) - Vain Deb) 54 2 (C Munce, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse) pressed forward to lead travelling inside the favourite to the turn, challenged by Snowden topping the rise but maintained a strong finish over the final 200m to draw clear when it mattered, continued the trend of leaders winning on the day ($4.00 $5.00 $4.60).2. SNOWDEN: br c 2y (Octagonal (NZ) - Snowdrift (FR) 56 9 (C Brown, Trainer: John Hawkes) dwelt at the start but quickly mustered speed to race in 2nd spot outside the winner to the turn, briefly looked a threat to Pasikatera near the 300m but found the more experienced winner too strong over the final 100m (2.80 3.10 2.70 2.90 fav) 21/2len.3. KINCHARM: b or br g 2y (Ebony Grosve (NZ) - Stretto (NZ) 56 6 (J Cassidy, Trainer: Kevin Moses) settled 9th after a slow start, covered ground on the turn where now 8th, tried hard from the 350m without threatening the first pair (4.00 4.80 4.60) 21/2len, 1.0len.4. WRONG CALL: 56 5 (L Cassidy) settled 7th and covered ground all the way to the turn, couldn't match the finish of Kincharm but did easily account for the rest (17.00 21.00 20.00 21.00) 4.8len.5. JUNEBUG: 54 1 (Z Purton) 5th settling, 4th turn (6.00 8.00 6.50) 6.8len.6. Redoubtablemperor: 56 7 (H Bowman) settled 3rd, followed Snowden to the turn where now under pressure, became unbalanced near 400m and failed to look a winning threat from that point (4.00 8.50 8 8.50) 10.6len.7. Pecan: 54 3 (J Innes) settled 10th, 9th turn (17.00 61.00 51.00) 12.7len.8. Mehter: 54 8 (J Ford) 4th settling, 3rd turn (51.00 71.00) 12.8len.9. Off: 2.32.RACE 5: BROADWAY HCP 1400m Fav: Isle Of Gibraltar ($2.40) 8thDANEWIN'S heavily topped daughter NAVAHO PRINCESS looked quite smart as a youngster but all too often that vital 'oomph' was missing nearing the end of races.A stronger, more willing four-year-old now does the rounds and she'll be shooting for a winning hat-trick when Graeme Rogerson next produces her.Quick from the gates, the bay took up the running and bowled along comfortably before kicking on with a winning lead down the rise.Nothing looked like catching her from the rise although VACHERE rocketed down the outside with a cracking late finish. Alas, all too late.Ever consistent, DISGUISE notched yet another placing after parking behind the leaders but she's not accelerating well enough to land a 1400m event at present.1. NAVAHO PRINCESS: F Farooq's b m 4y (Danewin - La Rosa) 54 9 (H Bowman, Trainer: Graeme Rogerson) led travelling inside the favourite to the turn, kicked clear topping the rise in what turned out to be a winning lead, kept trying maintaining the good record of leaders early in the day as Vachere closed late ($10.00 $14.00 $12.00 $13.00).2. VACHERE: b m 4y (Flying Spur - Forget Paris) 55.5 7 (C Brown, Trainer: John O'Shea) settled 8th, still 8th on the turn where conceding too great a start, kept closing over the last 250m gaining good ground against the winner but with the post too close in a good run nonetheless (4.80 6.00 5.50) 0.75len.3. DISGUISE: b or br m 4y (Grand Lodge (USA) - Effervescence) 56.5 4 (R M Quinn, Trainer: John Hawkes) settled 5th, 4th turn after saving ground and enjoying the good run all the way, gained an inside split when needed and tried hard but found the first pair too strong on the day (3.30 5.50) 0.75len, lg hd.4. Assertiveness: 53 8 (C Munce) settled 6th, covered ground on the turn where still 6th with Vachere now trailing her, became crowded from that point to the 200m then kept battling honestly, needed more room to do her best (6.00 8.50 7.00 7.50) 3.1len.7. Vodka And Lion: 53 5 (L Cassidy) 9th turn (26.00 41.00 31.00 41.00) 4.2len.8. Off: 3.10.RACE 6: CARRINGTON STAKES 1000m Fav: Resistor ($2.90) 6thSUGGESTIONS that Randwick was playing towards on-pace runners were dispelled around 100m from the finish of the sixth when PRESENTLY bounded up from near the rear. One of the rare steeds officially described as 'black', this rangy fellow tends to sprint for just over 250m at full bore and Corey Brown rode a masterful race, saving him for as long as possible.Presently's closing surge was undeniable yesterday and he swept upon LUCKY NIGHT which knows a thing or two about finishing fast, too.SIR CANNY, a rising 10 year-old, looked in superb order yesterday. Despite his age, the chestnut revels in competition and he fared best of the speedballs yesterday despite trekking three deep without cover.1. PRESENTLY: J T & Mrs P M O'Brien & Torryburn Stud & Mrs P K, B J & Ms T M Cornish's blk g 6y (Unbridled's Song (USA) - Centaine's Gift (NZ) 54.5 8 (C Brown, Trainer: Bruce McLachlan) settled 6th, travelled wide with cover following Lucky Night to the turn, sustained a strong run to outfinish that horse over the last 100m despite trying to lay in under pressure ($7.00 $9.50 $8.00).2. LUCKY NIGHT: br g 5y (Sir Laurence (NZ) - She's A Success) 55 4 (C Munce, Trainer: Pat Farrell) settled 3rd, raced wide without cover to the turn, loomed up near the 200m but had no answer to the winners finish when it counted (4.40 5.00) 3/4len.3. SIR CANNY: ch g 9y (Canny Lad - Tenakee (USA) 56.5 6 (D Spriggs, Trainer: Jenelle Butler) pressed forward to lead racing wide without cover to the turn, was claimed near the 150m and had no anwser to the finish of first pair (4.40 5.00 4.40 4.60) 3/4len, 11/2len.4. Resistor: 53.5 1 (G Boss) settled 5th, steadily improved with a dream run on the rails to be 3rd on the turn and threatening, asked to improve with an inside split soon after but failed to run on in the stright (3.00 3.40 2.90 3.30 2.90 fav) 6.1len.7. Off: 3.50.RACE 7: TATTERSALLS CLUB CUP 2000mFav: Dante's Paradiso ($1.70) 1stDANTE'S PARADISO has long demonstrated group race-winning speed and he needed every skerrick of that quality in winning.Yes, it was easy in the end (he coasted home), but only a class act could have overcome a seventh length leeway as the field headed up for home.Jim Cassidy knew what manner of horse he was steering. The 'Pumper' was content to bide his time until the 300m, angled into open space, then set out after the leader INSTITUTION.Although he's tenacious, Institution is totally devoid of closing acceleration and offered token opposition when the crunch came.SALGADO ran a sound race until the 100m when stamina came into play - he's copped a galloping lesson from the winner.1. DANTE'S PARADISO: J A Bester, J C Izon, P R Reidie, D M Reidy, W Bugno & B Darcy's ch g 4y (Danske (NZ) - Genesis (NZ) 56.5 3 (J Cassidy, Trainer: David Payne) settled 8th, 7th turn where blocked for a run, angled clear near the 200m and kept closing to outfinish the leader (Institution) and then draw clear in a very authoritative performance, clearly destined to win better races ($1.90 $2.00 $1.70 fav).2. INSTITUTION: ch g 6y (Manaloj (USA) - Oxford) 53 4 (G Boss, Trainer: Kevin Moses) led to the turn, held a clear lead near the 350m with the favourite held up, eventually claimed by Dantes's Paradiso near the line (10.00 12.00 11.00 12.00) 1.0len.3. SALGADO: br g 7y (Danewin - Slight Chance (NZ) 56.5 8 (C Brown, Trainer: John Hawkes) settled 9th, taken wide racing outside the winner from the 600m to improve, tried hard down the middle of the track but couldn't match Dante's Paradiso over the last 100m (9.00 15.00 13.00 14.00) 1.0len, nk.4. RUN RITA RUN: 53 2 (J Innes) settled 6th, continually saved ground on the inside but became under pressure near the 500m, kept battling away honestly in the straight after only leaving the fence over the concluding stages, did race as if more ground will suit (8.00 16.00) 1.6len.5. MAHTOUM: 53.5 9 (J Ford) settled 10th and followed Salgado from the 800m, asked to improve on the extreme outside after turning for home, battled away honestly to the 100m where Salgado did finish off stronger (8.50 11.00) 3.1len.6. Off: 4.30.RACE 8: BILLY COOK HCP 1400mFav: Imperialism ($3.70) 2ndA nice kick-along for Zac Purton who did manage to get himself trapped three wide without cover aboard FRANCE SOIR.Purton wasn't able to do much about his predicament, having jumped from the second widest gate, but he's adept at getting horses to 'travel'.Even though this winner did it tough, his rider held him together beautifully for as long as possible, before sooling the Kevin Moses-trained gelding home an impressive winner.Blinkers came off IMPERIALISM for the first time and, able to run along unchallenged early, he was entitled to get home. Especially since the winner worked hard. And MICHAEL DA DRAGON wound up soundly for the minor placing at his second-up assignment. He'll be trimmer next outing.1. FRANCE SOIR: G J & Mrs B S Donnay's b g 5y (Celtic Swing (GB) - Causette) 54.5 10 (Z Purton, Trainer: Kevin Moses) settled 4th but raced wide without cover in the run to the turn, loomed up nonetheless near the 250m and sustained a strong run to narrowly outfinish Imperialism in a battle from the 150m, kept trying despite covering ground and facing the breeze all the way ($8.00 $9.00 $8.00).2. IMPERIALISM: b g 4y (Flying Spur - Lady Kariba) 55 2 (H Bowman, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse) settled in the equal lead on the rails and held that position to the turn, edged clear topping the rise and battled on gamely looking the likely winner until 100m out where he failed to repel the challenge of the winner which raced wide without cover all the way (3.50 3.80 3.70 fav) nk.3. MICHAEL DA DRAGON: br h 5y (Bite The Bullet (USA) - Gainesville (Can) 54.5 4 (B Pengelly, Trainer: Les Bridge) settled 8th, saved ground on the turn where now 7th, asked to improve with room near the 300m, tried hard from that point and was only second-up, can improve (13.00 17.00 15.00) nk, 1.0len.4. RIVER TO THE SEA: 56.5 11 (J Ford) settled 10th, 9th turn where looking for the way clear, angled through a split near the 300m, battled on gamely but conceded too great a start from the turn (8.50 12.00 10.00) 1.5len.5. Off: 5.10.RACE 9: MERITON APARTMENTS HCP 1100m Fav: Lieutenant ($2.50) 2ndUP-AND-COMERS aplenty in the last and none more promising than VIONNETO, previously a maiden half brother to Academe, Cheverny and Fashion News.Headstrong, like his siblings, the Danzero gelding did get himself worked up heading onto the track and was led to the barriers by the clerk of the course. The mollycoddling settled this big bay just enough for Hugh Bowman to restrain back in the field, before a whirlwind burst saw Vionneto pounce on the leading contingent.Through the last 200m LIEUTENANT was the only rival to offer resistance but a 3.5kg weight difference probably played a role in the outcome. And Lieutenant didn't seem as forward as the winner.HIGH PRIORITY held third after mixing it up on the speed with another sweaty one, THE PIANIST never in it after a poor start.NOTE: Due to an on-course technical problem, sectional times are not available for this event.FUTURE: Vionneto to win again .. and again.1. VIONNETO: O P Tait & Mrs J G Nivison's b g 3y (Danzero - Vionnet) 53 6 (H Bowman, Trainer: Guy Walter) settled 7th, travelled wide and followed the favourite to the turn, sustained a strong run from that point to narrowly prevail in a tight finish with the 2nd horse easily accounting for the rest ($7.00 $11.00 $6.50).2. LIEUTENANT: b g 3y (Danehill Dancer (Ire) - Sovereign Countess) 56.5 4 (C Brown, Trainer: John Hawkes) enjoyed a good run behind a line of leaders to the turn, loomed near 250m and kept trying only to be shaded on the post by the winner, far too good for all his other opposition (3.40 3.50 2.45 2.50 fav) 1/2hd.3. HIGH PRIORITY: ch g 3y (Strategic - Kin) 53.5 8 (C Munce, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse) raced in the joint lead without any peace to the turn, claimed near 150m and plugged from that point (4.00 6.00 5.50) 1/2hd, 3.0len.4. SUPER SWEEP: 54 7 (L Cassidy) raced in equal lead on the inside in a line of leaders to the turn, became under pressure topping the rise and was tired from the 150m as her condition gave out (3.40 5.00 4.60 4.80) 3.5len.5.
